Five minute holiday meditation

If you're reading this you probably have come to the realization that the holidays can mean two things: 1) they are a magical time 2) they’re stressful as hell.

'Tis the season to spread good cheer for all to hear; but there's also the shopping, sugar, awkward ugly sweater Christmas parties with your co-workers and maybe a few family feuds here or there. So finding a balance is key. That's where self-love and a little meditation come into play.

Sit up straight and tall and notice your breath. Not needing to change anything just simply acknowledge it's pace and tempo. Take a full body scan and recognize how you are doing - physically, mentally, energetically and emotionally.

For about 2 ½ minutes, inhale through your nose to a silent count of 4, and exhale through your mouth making a “shhhhh” sound for about 6-8 counts. Set a pace that is comfortable for you. Focus on your breath and think of your inhales as bringing in the good, and your exhales letting go of anything, any thoughts that may be not so good.

Now devote 2 ½ minutes reversing the rhythm with a sustained in-breath through your nose of 6-8 counts and shorter exhalation of four counts, breathing through your nose for both parts.

If your mind begins to wander, bring it back to your breath. If it helps, picture your oxygen traveling through your body, entering every cell of your body, creating space, creating energy.

After five minutes is up, take a big deep breath in through your nose, and audible open mouth exhale. Sit silently and notice any shifts that you may have created. You are welcome back to this breath, meditation anytime, anywhere.

Namaste
